Overview: Parents desire to see their children have a meaningful relationship with Christ. The main job of a parent is to lead their children to a place where they see their need for a Savior. The burden of Salvation, however, rests upon God, not parents. We cannot lead our children to Christ, but rather lead them to a place where they see their own need for a Savior. The rest is up to the Lord.

Overview: Research shows that a child’s basic moral foundation is established by age five. By age thirteen their understanding of God and the Bible is set. Our children are like wet cement. Just like the urgency when cement is first poured, there is an urgency with our children. Be intentional in effectively and strategically imparting spiritual truths in your children.

Outsourcing

Overview: The popular life strategy of outsourcing is often mistakenly applied to spiritual parenting as well. By regularly attending a dynamic children’s ministry, parents feel they can have truth spiritually imparted to their kids by the “experts.” But the Bible tells us that the passing on of the faith is a role of the parents! Parents are the main influence in their children’s lives. You might not feel the most qualified to raise your children spiritually, but you are in the best position to spiritually influence them. Parents are called to be the primary spiritual leader in their kids’ lives!

Overview: We need to be reminded that we are accountable to God for how we raise our children spiritually! Excuses are not allowed. Depending on your spouse or someone else to spiritually teach your children is not a valid excuse. Intentional instruction, in memorable ways, connects with your children. You will be held accountable for spiritually instructing your kids.

Overview: There is a sense of responsibility that comes with having kids, as well as a sense of urgency to pass our faith on to our kids. Some feel that they are not the creative, kid type, and do not feel up to the task of passing on their faith. But remember, if you can read, you can lead. Simply reading a children’s Bible chronologically (and consistently) with your children is a great start. Not only are you passing on your faith, but you will learn so much about the big picture understanding of the Bible. You only have one shot at parenting; don’t waste your opportunity.

Overview: God has been at work in you, since before you took your first breath. He has plans for you as a person and as a parent. These plans will set things into motion that will affect generations to come. Part of His plan for you is the passing on of the story of His greatness to another generation (your children). The work God began in your children, before they were born, will be carried out when you are gone. While we are an active part of His plan, we need to look to Him to allow us to proclaim His glory to another generation. Start a legacy; be intentional today, for the next generation.

Overview: Deuteronomy 6 tells us to impress God’s commands upon our children. The spiritual health of the nation was to be accomplished through the family. Parents are the greatest factor of influence in a child’s life, so God’s strategy is for His truth to be passed on through the family. God gives us four opportunities in our daily life to influence our children: when we sit at home, when we walk along the road, when we lie down, and when we get up. In today’s world those four opportunities translate to: dinner time conversation, drive time, bed time, and breakfast time. Using the vehicle of the family, you — the parent — are working to impress God’s Word upon your children.

Overview: The concept of vaccinations/immunizations is giving a small, weakened dose of a disease, creating immunity. When it comes to your children, you do not want them becoming immune to the faith. You want to give them the full dose of Christ. Don’t pass on a dead, half defeated, weakened version of Christianity. An everyday faith that gives Lordship to Christ in everything you do is a faith you can give to your kids. An unmistakable, honest faith will become contagious to your children. But, you can’t give or transmit what you don’t have. It has to start with you. Much more is caught than taught. Have a faith that is worthy of being caught.

The 5 B’s of Family Devotions

Overview: Sometimes, out of the desire for our children to have a healthy spiritual experience, we over share and drag things out. “Be brief, brother. Be brief.” Keep your devotion time together fun, exciting, and brief. You want your children to want more. An appropriate amount of devotion time should correspond to the age of the children; think short, but consistent burst of time. Time plus consistency of a behavior will lead to results. Keep it short and sweet and they will want more!

Better to Give

Overview: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” In the Kingdom of God, things are sometimes upside down. Do you want to receive? You must first give. What a person sows, he will reap. Give to your kids. Be intentional today, so you can see fruit, a boundless harvest in your family. Sow seeds today. Give to your kids.

Overview: One day Jesus is coming and He will repay the faithful. The extra effort of intentionality, pouring into your children by faith, will be rewarded. We have been called to be spiritually nurturing agents to our children. But we need eyes to see where to best minister to our children. Ask what you can do this week, where you can be used in the life of your kids. Small acts of intentionality, done by faith in the Lord, will be rewarded. Be faithful to the Lord to be the spiritual leader of your family. Faithfully add one spiritual building block to another, so a well-established foundation of faith is formed in our children.

Overview: God doesn’t charge us when we come to Him in prayer for advice. He doesn’t shame us. He loves it when we come to Him in prayer! Ask Him to help you navigate this parenting path. When you are lacking wisdom, ask God. When you feel like a failure as a parent, ask God. He will do powerful things based on His people’s prayers. Be faithful, be prayerful, and He will give you His wisdom.

Overview: Be a faithful participant in the good work of God in the lives of your children. God has chosen you to be a part of your children’s lives for this season. He will carry on the work in their lives long after you are gone. Trust in God that He will carry on this good work, through your obedience, until completion.

Overview: If we were honest with ourselves, we would realize that we, too, are guilty of complaining. As parents, we even complain about our kids. We might not complain verbally, but internally, it is there. Frustration, loss of joy, anxiety, or even dread – parenting can be challenging. Instead of complaining about it, surrender these exact requests to God. Share your anxiety with God in prayer.

Be Imitators of God

Overview: Ephesians tells us we are to be “imitators of God.” To imitate is to mimic or impersonate. Your kids mimic you. They want to do what you do. Whether you realize it or not, you have a larger than life status in your kids’ lives. Take reflection on what you say and do. The whole world might not be following you, but your children are. Are you walking in the manor of the Lord, in a way that is worthy of imitation?

Overview: Kids are full of questions. Sometimes really good questions. In 2 Timothy 2:15, we are told to, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” Notice that it says, “do your best”. It does not say, “be perfect.” It does not say, “know every answer in order to be approved by God.” It says, “do your best.” Modeling humility and an acceptance of the unsearchable mysteries of God is probably the most important answer of all.

Another Significant Adult

Overview: About 75% of children attending church walked away from the church between the ages of 18-29. Of those who stayed in the church, a survey showed that one of the factors leading to them staying in church was the presence of adults in their lives who believed the same things as mom and dad, but were not mom and dad. The church is the greatest place for this to happen. The church is one of the best places for you to find another foundational adult for your children’s lives.

Overview: God is looking for someone to stand behind and show Himself faithful to. How amazing would it be to be that person; to be the person who God wants to strongly support. Be that person who is waiting for God to show up. In your role as a parent, eagerly look for the Lord to make movements in the lives of your kids. Take action to see Christ move in your kids. Wait for God to change the hearts of your children. Be that someone that God is pleased to strongly support.

Overview: Investing in your children at a young age is a fruitful venture. Being intentional in participating in your children’s spiritual life is worthy. A child’s moral foundation is set by age 5. Big picture concepts of God are solidified by age 13. You, as a parent, play a large role in your child’s moral structure. Spiritual parenting is a great responsibility. Faithfully teach the concepts of the kingdom of God in a memorable way to your children. Your involvement as a spiritually engaged parent, early on in the life of your child, is a big job. Take it seriously.

Do Not Grow Weary

Overview: God’s Word reminds us that we are not to grow weary. We are, however, prone to become weary and to give up. When you begin to grow weary, and think the effort might not be worth it, remember the law of the harvest. Whatever you sow, you will reap. The journey of parenting is a journey of faith. Your effort to raise your children in the manor of the Lord is worth it. The seeds you are planting will result in a tree that will someday grow fruit. Don’t grow weary. Seeds sown in faithfulness will yield a great reward.

Overview: We have the ability to begin leadership development in our children today. Take the leadership skills they already possess and fan that gift into a flame. Involve your kids. Yes, tasks may take longer or messes may be made, but the benefit of taking the time to involve them is worth it. Look for ways to develop their shortcomings. Seek to develop future leaders in your children.

Be the Adult

Overview: You, as the parent, create the climate and mood of the family. You can make your child’s life miserable or joyous. It is your response that determines the level of a crisis and your child’s feelings in a situation. Be an adult. Extend grace. Crushing the spirit of your child isn’t worth the shut down in the moment. Regardless of your children’s actions, blowing up or humiliating them is not appropriate. Give a blessing, act with grace, and do not crush your kids.

Overview: Studies show that 75% of kids will leave the church when they graduate from high school, and not pursue a relationship with Christ. Of the children who stayed, there were five factors leading to their staying: they ate dinner 5 of the 7 nights together, served together, had a significant spiritual experience in the home, were entrusted with responsibility in the ministry, and had at least one adult in their lives (not their parents) believing the same things that their parents believed. You as a parent need to be intentionally engaged with your children. Ultimately it is God who does the work in your child’s life, and you need to continue to trust God with their lives.

Overview: Studies have shown that children who were entrusted with significant responsibility at a young age were more likely to stay connected to Christ and the church when they grew up. They were given a chance to contribute to the ministry. Children will find satisfaction in Christ when they are giving through service, the same as adults do. They need this experience. It’s not always easy to find a way for children to contribute to the ministry, but it is important, resulting in lifelong impact.

Overview: One of the most important things a family can do together, to increase the likelihood that children will stay connected to Christ when they leave the home, is to eat dinner together. Intentionally create a rhythm of connection with your family by starting with simple questions like, “What was the best part of your day?” and “What was the most challenging part of your day?” With a relational rhythm in place, children are able to discuss important life issues, including spiritual matters, at the dinner table.
